Clinivet Ras Loughgiel This Weekend

The North West 200 isn’t the only bike race taking place this weekend, with all those more interested in pedal power than motor power heading to Loughgiel for the Clinivet sponsored Rás Loughgiel 2 day stage race organised by Duffin Transport Racing Team.

With 80 riders entered this race is sure to bring a buzz of excitement to the North Antrim village. The Clinivet Ras is for A4 racers and is regarded as the toughest A4 race on the cycling calendar and a proper cycling test for all involved.

Duffin Transport cyclist Oliver Bateson said:

“We have the cream of A4 racers from across Ulster entered and I can guarantee it will be a strong rider who wins this race. There will be a 30 mile Road stage around the roads of Loughgiel on Friday night which is really just a warm up for what is to come on Saturday. On Saturday the second stage will consist of a short Time Trial with all 80 riders facing off against the clock. The queen stage though comes on Saturday afternoon with a 50 mile road stage taking the riders up Reservoir Road and over Orra Mountain on their return to the finish in Loughgiel. This stage will provide a worthy winner to the race.

Mr Bateson continued:

“We have put out notices to alert residents along the route to the fact that the race is taking place but we expect disruption to be kept to a minimum. I would ask road user on the roads to be alert to the fact that the race is taking place and obey the instructions of the race marshals. We would like to thank in advance those who are coming out over the weekend to help us put the race on and in particular we would like to thank Clinivet our sponsors for the race.

Steven Mc Garry of Clinivet said:

CLINIVET is always keen to support local events and is delighted to be the brand partner for the Duffin Transport Racing Team 2 day event taking place in Loughgiel. This is the second time this event has been run and the event was fully booked only after a short time of the date being released. CLINIVET’s management team wish the organising committee of the event every success and a safe weekends riding.”

Allergies and intolerances

What is an allergy?

Allergies are immunological reactions in response to certain proteins in the food. Frequently these are seen in response to dairy products, mammalian meats (such as beef or lamb) and wheat gluten. Allergies respond well to antibiotics, but usually recur once the course of antibiotics has finished.

What are the symptoms of food allergies?

Common signs of food allergies are:

  • loose stools
  • dirrhoea
  • reduced appetite
  • weight loss
  • bloating
  • vomiting.

Some dogs can also be itchy and suffer from skin allergies as a result of eating a particular food. If the allergy is displayed as inflammation of the skin, it will present itself as being very itchy. The resulting scratching and biting can lead to a secondary infection that can become crusty.

Digestive tract inflammation can also occur, and this would be exhibited as colitis or diarrhoea resulting in blood and/or mucous in the stools.

To determine if your dog has a food allergy, you must follow an exclusion diet. This involved feeding only one protein and one carbohydrate source (usually plain boiled chicken and rice) to your pet for several days. If this does not invoke a reaction, then very slowly new foods can be added. Once a reaction has been identified, it is then possible to confirm what it is that your dog is allergic to.

Hypoallergenic diets

If your vet confirms that your dog or cat has an allergy to a foodstuff, then it is often advised to try a new protein source (e.g. chicken, lamb, turkey, rabbit, etc) that the animal has not previously been exposed to. These diets are sometimes called ‘hypoallergenic’ as it is a food free from common allergens.

It can be beneficial if the new ‘hypoallergenic’, ‘low allergen’, ‘sensitive’ food has added benefits, such as highly digestible, lower in fat, rich in pro- and prebiotics, an optimal ration

The majority of allergens are proteins, and some pets are sensitive to the way the protein has been treated or processed, so they may tolerate some foods but not others.

When switching over to a new diet, it is important that the new food should be introduced gradually over a 7-day period, slowly adding more and more of the new diet mixed in with old food.

Food intolerances

Food intolerances frequently result in vomiting or diarrhoea, but do not create an allergic response.

If your vet confirms that your dog or cat has an intolerance to a foodstuff, then it is often advised to try a new protein source (e.g. chicken, lamb, turkey, rabbit etc) that the animal has not previously been exposed to. When switching over to a new diet, it is important that the new food should be introduced gradually over a 7-day period, slowly adding more and more of the new diet mixed in with old food.

CLINIVET petfood is formulated without beef, dairy, soya or wheat gluten products, making it a suitable food for dogs suffering from these conditions.  CLINIVET is also enriched with fructo-oligosaccharrides to promote good gut health and ensure complete digestion; it is an ideal food for dogs with sensitive digestive systems.

Are your pets protected from fleas?

As with most infections, prevention is better than cure, when trying to deal with fleas. Even if your pet does not have fleas, it is better to err on the side of caution and and use preventative methods to kill the fleas as quickly as possible after contact with your pet.
